CAIRO – 5 June 2017: Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry welcomed electing Kuwait to occupy a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for a two-year-term starting January 2018.

Shoukry phoned First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah on Sunday and congratulated him for winning the UNSC position with a majority of votes amounting to 188, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmad Abu Zeid said.

Shoukry affirmed that Kuwait's victory, with a majority of votes, reflects its distinguished international and regional status.

He expressed Egypt's confidence in Kuwait’s moderate and balanced diplomacy, to be the best representative of the Arab world in this important international forum, Abu Zeid added.

UN General Assembly elected five non-permanent UNSC members on Friday. Equatorial Guinea won 185 votes, the Netherlands won 184 votes,Ivory Coast 185, Kuwait 188, Poland 190 and Peru 186.
