CAIRO – 2 February 2019: National Council for Women assured that all statistics spread through social networks and the media about rates of divorce and marriage in Egypt are not accurate, encouraging to refer to official reports for accurate rates.
In 2017, the number of marriage cases recorded 913 thousands, while the divorce cases hit 198 thousands, averaging 21.7% of divorce ratio to every 100 marriage case. This recorded the least ratio worldwide, according to the official statistics issued by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
Additionally, 4,400 cases of the divorced women return to their former husbands and 24 thousand of divorced wives get married for another time.
Official data referred that rate of customary marriage (Urfi marriage) hit 149 thousand in 2017; underage girls constitute a third of this rate and 22 percent for women ranged between 22 to 24 years old.
The data also showed that the number of children below 15 years old who live with their mothers after parents' separation recorded 778 thousand and 162 thousand for those who live with their fathers, recording 3 percent for children who live with only one of their parents.
