CAIRO – 27 January 2019: The Egyptian Air Forces managed to eliminate a number of terrorist elements, including two prominent leaders in North Sinai, army spokesman Tamer al-Rifae said in a statement on Sunday, Jan. 27.
The statement did not specify the exact number of elements killed or name the terrorist group the elements belonged to.
The air forces carried out a sortie to target a terrorist outpost the forces could find based on investigative reports, the statement said. By following up on the results of the aerial bombardment, a number of terrorist elements were found killed, including two of the main leaders of the terrorist organization in North Sinai, the statement added.
Earlier this year, army troops, in cooperation with police forces, managed to eliminate a number of 59 "takfiri" elements, including 15 "highly dangerous" terrorists as part of the military operation launched in 2018 to end terrorism nationwide, according to a military statement.
The statement also revealed that an officer and six soldiers lost their lives during raids.
In February 2018, and under the title "Comprehensive Operation Sinai 2018", The Egyptian army, in cooperation with police forces, launched a comprehensive military operation targeting the hotbeds of terrorists nationwide especially in Northern and Central Sinai.
Sinai, in particular, has been a staging ground for militants operating in Egypt for decades. It is also believed to be home to the Islamic State’s (IS) Egyptian branch, which has been primarily targeting civilians and security forces.
