Egypt affirms caring for Africa's humanitarian issues

CAIRO - 23 January 2019: Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri said that Egypt pays special attention to Africa's humanitarian affairs in the light of the country's presidency of the African Union in 2019, ministry spokesman Ahmed Hafez said.

Shoukri expressed keenness to strengthen cooperation with the international community in this regard, during his meeting with Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Elhadj As Sy.

The Egyptian foreign minister affirmed the importance of cooperation in the issues of health and the combat of epidemics and diseases in Africa, referring to the assistance Egypt provides through the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD), according to Hafez.

He also reviewed some initiatives to cooperate with African countries to combat infectious diseases, sponsored by Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, including an initiative to treat African people infected with Hepatitis C, Hafez said.

For his part, Elhadj As Sy lauded Egypt's role in respecting the international humanitarian law, expressing appreciation of the country's efforts through its institutions including the Egyptian Red Crescent. He affirmed keenness to continue and sustain cooperation with Egypt in various fields.

In January 2018, Egypt has been elected as chair of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government for a one-year term in 2019.

Becoming a role model for the African nations, Egypt, under Sisi's rule, has launched the "100 Million Seha (Health)" campaign to detect and treat for free locals infected with chronic diseases including Hepatitis C and Diabetes.

Political leadership directs testing Africans for HCV: official

CAIRO - 16 January 2019: Health official Wahid Dous affirmed that the political leadership directed to carry out a plan to detect and treat hepatitis C, following Egypt's successful national medical model dubbed "100 Million Seha (health)."

Shoukri also met on Monday with Phil Hogan, the commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development in Cairo to discuss ways of enhancing the Egyptian ties with the European Union, a statement by the foreign ministry said.

During the meeting, a proposal on establishing a tripartite agricultural cooperation between, Egypt, the European Union and African countries has been discussed.
