CAIRO – 30 May 2017: Qena has been declared the first squatter-free governorate in Upper Egypt since all encroachments on state property have been cleared, according to Qena’s governor, Gen. Abdel-Hamid al-Haggan.
“The government has already embarked on a plan to restore state lands using warning signs,” Haggan said, pointing out that squatters now seek legalizing their situation.
Earlier in May, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi ordered the army and police to investigate land encroachments and reclaim the illegally acquired state lands.
