CAIRO – 30 May 2017: The Supreme Media Council will form a committee to consider complaints of blocked websites owners, upon request of Journalists’ Syndicate, head of the council, Makram Mohamed Ahmed stated Tuesday.
The Syndicate has appealed to the Council to form investigative committee to determine the legal situation of banned websites, and reconsider their commitment to media regulations and its legitimacy.
“The syndicate has received reports of banned websites owners, demand to consider their complaints, showing their full commitment to cooperate with investigative bodies,” the syndicate’s letter to the supreme council reads, expressing The committee will include head of the council, two secretary-generals of the council, member of state council, and a possibility of joining the syndicate’s head, Abdel Mohsen Salama. The committee is set to be formed within two days, according to Ahmed.
On May 24, Security authorities blocked several media websites, over accusations of affiliation with Qatar and the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group, including Al-Jazeera website.
The banning list included Rassd, Ikhwan Online, Arabi 21, Al-Sharq TV website, Hamas, Hasem, Bawababet Al-Qahira, Nafezet Masr, Hurria Post, Mada Masr, Daily News Egypt and Alborsa News.
However, the ban was lifted partially through some internet service providers, on websites like Mada Masr, Daily News Egypt and Alborsa News.
