CAIRO - 22 October 2018: Grand Imam of Al Azhar Ahmed el Tayyeb said Azhar's openness with major religious institutions in Europe is a cogent proof of narrowing the gap between Islamic communities in the East and Christian communities in the West.

Tayyeb made the remarks during an international seminar held in Cairo under the theme of Islam and the West.

Tayyeb - the head of the Muslim Elders Council - said the Azhar University embraces teaching Islamic heritage in a way that contributes to graduating moderate religious scholars capable of coping with modern age.

He criticized linking Islam to terrorism, expounding the reasons behind terrorism.

Grand Imam also said East and West came to share many cultural and civilizational perspectives.

He rejected linking Islam to terrorism, wondering if any Islamic people were owning a mass destruction factory so that they would terrify anyone, adding that the problem is with the global weapons' manufacturers, the neo-colonialism and the abhorrent racial policies.
