CAIRO – 27 May 2017: Fifty-one members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood were placed on the national terrorists’ list Saturday, including Supreme Guide Mohammed Badie, according to the Official Gazette.

The decision entails a wide range of legal measures that will apply to the listed names, including Official spokesman of the Muslim Brotherhood Mahmoud Ghazlan and members of the Guidance Office Hossam Abu Bakr and Moustafa al-Ghoneimy.

The listed members are thereafter prohibited from performing any political rights or being nominated for public offices. They cannot issue a passport and their assets will all be confiscated, according to the Egyptian law.

Legal expert Shawki el-Sayyid explained that these are lifetime prohibitions and cannot be appealed.

Salah Eddin Fawzy, professor of Public Law at the University of Mansoura, also stated that the above measures dismiss the principle of good reputation, which is an essential condition to assume any public offices, according to Article 8 of the Egyptian penal code.

All listed names are banned from travelling outside the country and will be placed on the airports arrivals watchlist in case they are fugitives, Fawzy stated, adding that their passports will be confiscated and they will be prohibited from issuing any new ones.

Fawzy further referred to a new article that has been added to the terrorism law, entailing that anyone placed on the terrorists watchlist is prohibited from taking part in any social activity.

The Cairo criminal court had added 1,538 people to the terrorists list in January for alleged alliance or assistance to the Muslim Brotherhood, including former President Mohamed Morsi and his sons; Safwan Thabet, a businessman; football star Mohamed Abu Trika and Mostafa Sakr, a newspaper publisher.
