Emilio Butragueno (r) receives Ahed al-Tamimi in the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu - Twitter
CAIRO - 30 September 2018: Real Madrid received Ahed al-Tamimi on Sept. 28in the Estadio Santiago Bernabeuand gave her a number 9 T-shirt with her name on it. That came during Ahed's participation in a political and social event in Spain over the past week.
The act provoked attack by Israeli officials on the club, as the spokesperson of the IsraeliForeign Ministry tweeted: “The prestigious soccer club of Real Madrid embraces a terrorist inciting hatred and violence, shameful. What does this have to do with the values of soccer?”
Furthermore, the Israeli ambassador in Spain tweeted “AhedTamimi does not fight for peace; she defends violence and terror. The institutions that have received and celebrated her indirectly encourage aggression and not the dialogue and understanding that we need.”
Tamimi was handed the Real Madrid garment by former Real Madrid striker and current manager Emilio Butragueno.
Tamimi and her mother served an eight-month prison sentence for slapping an IDF soldieroutside their home in the village of Nabi Saleh in the occupied West Bank last December. The soldiers had taken up positions next to the house amid protests in the village against U.S. President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Tamimi, 17, became an icon for Palestinian resistance as she used to protest against the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories. The sentence stirred up anger on an international scale.
