CAIRO – 29 August 2018: Al-Azhar stated that sexual harassment is forbidden by Islamic Shari'a and it is a violation of human ethics that is condemned beyond all justifications.

Al-Azhar said Monday that it closely follows up the reports of sexual harassment incidents recently circulated by media outlets and social media networks, including harassers’ violent attacks on those trying to save women.

Some claim that women’s clothes or behaviors may justify this offense; Al-Azhar stresses that sexual harassment in all its forms is forbidden by Islamic Shari'a regardless the contexts and conditions, the statement added.

God says, “The ones who hurt male believers and female believers for [something] they have not earned have certainly born upon themselves a slander and manifested sin. (Quran, al-Ahzab 33: 58)", according to the statement.

NCW monitors 15 harassment cases at Giza Zoo on 2nd day of Eid

CAIRO - 24 August 2018: The National Council for Women (NCW) announced Thursday that it managed to monitor 15 sexual harassment cases at the Giza Zoo during the 2 nd day of Eid Al Adha, as part of its efforts to eliminate this phenomenon in the society.

“Harassment violates women’s privacy, freedom and human dignity,” according to Al-Azhar.

Al-Azhar affirmed that honoring women is indicative of the progress of human societies and is a true sign of social stability and security.

When Prophet Mohamed wanted to highlight the merits of Islam, he argued that women’s feeling of security is enough evidence for it. The Prophet is quoted to have prophesied: "[A day would come when] a lady travels from Al-Hira (near Kufa in Iraq) and [safely reaches Mecca] performs the Tawaf around the Kaʻbah, fearing none but God."

Al-Azhar encouraged the activation of all laws that punish sexual harassers and called on all concerned official bodies to raise social awareness about the forms and dangers of sexual harassment.

“It is necessary to intensify media programs to educate citizens about their duties when being in the scene of this crime and about the proper way to protect women and victims, and deter criminals,” the statement affirmed.

Al-Azhar also called on media outlets to avoid circulating any materials justifying this crime.
