Sadat ‘veteran politician, deserves honoring’: Jehan Sadat

CAIRO - 25 August 2018: Wife of the late Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, Jehan Sadat, commented on the U.S. Senate’s bill to honor her husband, saying: “Sadat was a veteran politician who upheld peace values and prevented wars and bloodshed.”

The former first lady told Ten TV channel on Friday that such an honoring is a recognition of Sadat’s bravery, who found peace in a troubled region and at a very critical time. “He deserves that honor,” she told the TV presenter.

“Time has proved President Sadat right in sealing the peace deal of Camp David with the Israelis,” Jehan said, asserting that some leaders were opposed to the peace agreement back then. “When I met with those leaders later, they told me that they were wrong and he [Sadat] was right,” she added.



The U.S. Senate passed a bill to honor former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, according to a Thursday statement by the Egyptian Embassy in Washington.

“The Anwar Sadat Centennial Celebration Act S266 awards the Congressional Gold Medal to Sadat ‘in recognition of his historic achievements and courageous contributions to peace in the Middle East’,” it added.

In September 2017, the senate hosted a ceremony to rally for the bill on the 100th anniversary of Sadat’s birth and the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Camp David Accords.
