Nepal vice president talks 60 years of relations with Egypt

CAIRO – 27 July 2018: Nepal’s Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun asserted on Thursday that the diplomatic relations between Nepal and Egypt are historic and that they have lasted and developed over 60 years.

Pun’s statements came throughout the inauguration of a cultural exhibition held to introduce the Egyptian civilization by the Egyptian Embassy in Nepal on the occasion of 66th anniversary of the July 23 Revolution and in celebration of 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

He stated that the Egyptian civilization is a place of pride, and that holding this cultural exhibition for the first time in Nepal, which shows some of the Pharaonic monuments,represents the best advertising of Egypt’s tourism.

On the other hand, Egypt’s Ambassador to Nepal Iman Mostafa told Egypt Today that the Egyptian-Nepalese relations will witness a development through all fields, especially in the field of tourism and trade exchange during the upcoming period.

The diplomatic relations between Nepal and Egypt wereestablished onJuly 16, 1957. Nepal inaugurated its embassy in Cairo in 1966 and Egypt’s embassy was opened in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, in 1970. Nepal backed the Camp David Accord signed by Egypt and Israel in 1978, which ultimately led to the signing of the Peace Treaty between Egypt and Israel in 1979.

Egypt signed a trade agreement with Nepal on 23 December 1975; this agreement has been ratified and a new agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation between the two countries was signed on 16 July 2007. There is a potential to further boost trade and investment between Nepal and Egypt. The volume of trade is insignificance in view of the scope currently.

An agreement of Cultural, Scientific and Technical Cooperation was signed between the two countries on 12 February 1976 with a target to expand the scope of cooperation in the fields of culture, science and technology.
