Upper Egypt-bound train derailed on Friday in Giza, leaving 55 people injured- Egypt Today/Khaled Kamel

CAIRO – 13 July 2018: Cairo-Aswan railway movement resumed in both directions after removing the derailed carriages of a train bound for Upper Egypt’s Qena, leaving 55 people injured on Friday, said Moamed Ezz, the Ministry of Transportation’s spokesperson, in a statement.

He added that trains also resumed after the investigators ended their site probe.

The air-conditioned train number 986 was coming from Cairo towards Qena, when the three railcars flipped over in Marazeeq Station on Aswa Western Agricultural Road in Giza.

Following the incident, head of the Egyptian National Railways Authority Sayed Salem ordered the transferring of lifting tools, cranes and maintenance teams to the scene.

According to the initial investigations, sources revealed to Egypt Today on condition of anonymity as they are not authorized to brief the media that the majority of the injured people suffered from fractures and bruises due to commuters’ stampede caused by the train derailment. He added that the injured people would leave hospital soon.

The driver of the train was kept in custody pending investigations. Minister of Transportation Hisham Arafat ordered the formation of a committee to probe the incident and reveal its causes.

CAIRO - 13 July 2018: The driver of the train that derailed near Giza on Friday, leaving 55 injured, was kept in custody as official investigations were launched into the accident. The Minister of Transportation Hisham Arafat ordered the formation of a committee to probe the incident and reveal its causes.




In March, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi said that Egypt’s rail lines require funds from LE 200 billion ($11 billion) to LE 250 billion ($14 billion) to upgrade them.
During the inauguration of the first phase of the New Alamein City, Sisi added that there is not enough money for the rehabilitation of rail lines, adding that he will raise money from passenger rail networks to be able to develop network lines.
