CAIRO – 13 July 2018: The number of people injured after three train cars derailed near Giza on Friday rose to 55, according to the Ministry of Health.

The air-conditioned train number 986 was coming from Cairo towards Upper Egypt’s Qena, when the three railcars flipped over in Marazeeq Station on Aswa Western Agricultural Road in Giza.

The ministry deployed 25 ambulance vehicles to the accident site, where 17 injured were taken to Haram Hospital, nine to Hawamdeya Hospital and eight others to Badrashin Hospital.

Health Minister Hala Zayed headed to Haram Hospital to follow up on the status of the injured.

Head of the Egyptian National Railways Authority Sayed Salem ordered to transfer lifting tools, cranes and maintenance teams to the scene.

Security agencies imposed a cordon around the accident site. An investigative team arrived at the scene to start probing the incident, listen to eyewitnesses and determine the reasons behind the accident.

In Nov. 2017, two trains collided in Alexandria, leaving more than 40 fatalities and 170 injuries. Investigations with 10 officials from the Egyptian Railway Authority about the accident revealed that the driver of one of the trains, Emad Helmy, was the cause of the accident.
