Egypt’s Ashmawy re-elected for ACERWC membership

CAIRO - 30 June 2018: Egypt's Secretary-General of National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM), Azza al-Ashmawy was re-elected Friday as a representative of Egypt at the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) for a second term respectively.

Ashmawy’s re-election came during the meeting of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU) at the conclusion of its 63rd session at the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott on late Friday.

The NCCM Secretary-General collected a majority of 47 in Friday's vote, to represent Egypt in ACERWC from 2018-2022.

Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry said the selection reflects Egypt's success in diplomacy at the United Nations and many other international organizations.

Ashmawy has taken part in several activities in Africa as a ACERWC member, such as preparing the African childhood initiative 2040, as well as preparing studies about children’s conditions. She also organized the celebrations of African Child Day under the title “We will not leave a child alone for Africa’s development, where several international and regional organizations participated, like Plan International, UNICEF, International Organization For Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

ACERWC was established in 2001, with a main goal represented in working towards making Africa a continent that is fit for children by protecting and respecting their rights. Its main functions are to collect information, interpret provisions of the Charter, monitor the implementation of the Charter, give recommendations to governments for working with child rights organisations, consider individual complaints about violations of children’s rights, and investigate measures adopted by Member States to implement the Charter, according to its official website.
