CAIRO – 26 June 2018: Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry will head to Nouakchott, capital of Mauritania, on Wednesday to participate in the 33rd Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, scheduled for June 28-29, 2018.
According to spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Abu Zeid's statement issued on Tuesday, Egypt’s participation in the African Summit comes within the framework of its keenness to interact with the continent’s issues, especially with Egypt's assumption of the African Union's presidency in January 2019.
The statement added that the meeting of the Executive Board and the forthcoming African Summit will focus on the institutional and financial reform of the African Union.
The meeting will also discuss the African Advisory Council’s reports, related to the African Court of Human Rights, in addition to the report of African Advisory Council against corruption and other financial issues such as the African Union’s 2019 budget, according to the statement.
Furthermore, the summit will discuss the situation in Southern Sudan as well as security and migration problems in Africa, the statement added.
Shoukry will hold bilateral meetings with the foreign ministers of a number of African countries to discuss regional issues of mutual concern.
It is worth mentioning that Egypt has been selected to assume the chairmanship of the African Union during 2019, which is indicative of Egypt's efforts in recent years to restore its effective role in Africa. Egypt will host the Conference on Investment in Africa from December 8-10, 2018 in Sharm El-Sheikh, and the first African trade fair from December 11-17, 2018 in Cairo.
