1st Christian on internship in Al-Azhar University hospital

CAIRO – 17 May 2017: Dental student Abanoub Giurgius Naiem’s request to carry out his pre-bachelor internship in Al-Azhar University hospital was accepted, dean of Faculty of Dentistry at Al-Azhar University Assuit branch, Dr. Khaled Sediq said Wednesday.

“Giurgius’s case is the first of its kind,” Sediq said, adding that Christian students ordinarily attend the training courses and workshops the faculty provides, but Christians are now allowed to enroll in Al-Azhar University, based on its respective laws.

He also underlined that Grand Imam Ahmed al-Tayyeb welcomed Guirgis’s request and praised the university’s decision to let him in.
Guirgis is currently enrolled in Nahda University in Beni Suef.
