CAIRO – 14 June 2018: Egypt was elected on Thursday as a member of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) for the tournament 2019-2022, according to Ambassador Mohamed Edris, Egypt’s permanent representative to the United Nations.

Egypt got 178 votes from the UN General Assembly, which is considered the highest rate of votes.

Edris added that Egypt was nominated for this seat as representative of the North African region within the African Group during the elections held at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Edris pointed out that this election coincides with Egypt's presidency of the Group of 77 + China during 2018, stressing Egypt's keenness to intensify its efforts within the United Nations Economic and Social System and to maximize its national, regional and international achievements in this regard.

UN ECOSOC serves as the central forum for discussing international economic and social issues, brings people and issues together to promote collective action for a sustainable world and addresses recommendations to Member States.
The UN Charter established ECOSOC in 1945 as one of the six main organs of the United Nations.
