CAIRO – 9 June 2018: Minister of Education and Technical Education Tarek Shawki, who was appointed last February to be a successor for al-Helaly al-Sherbiny, is expected to preserve his position after the prime minister’s resignation on June 5.

Even though it is still not officially known which ministers are going to be ousted from the new government selected by the newly-appointed Prime Minster Mostafa Madbouly; Shawki remains one of the ministers who are highly anticipated to keep their positions during the coming period.

Internet Police blocks 15 pages for leaking Thanaweya Amma exams

CAIRO - 6 June 2018: The Internet Police, in coordination with the Ministry of Education, blocked on Tuesday 15 pages on social media which attempted to leak this year's Thanaweya Amma exams. This came within the framework of the Ministry of Interior's plan to combat various forms of crime.

Shawki is handling several issues regarding the state’s development plan for education which is included within the country’s 2030 strategy. According to the new strategy which is supervised by Shawki, all the new students starting from kindergarten will be administered by a whole new system. The new system will be targeting Thanaweya Amma students starting from next year.

The new system is targeting about two million students according to Shawki’s previous statements. It aims to create severe changes in the current system and accordingly change the student’s characters and personalities.

Shawki is also likely to keep his position so he can continue the teachers training program which is affiliated with the new development plan of the education system. According to previous statements by the minister, about half a million teachers have completed their training already.

Thirdly, another teachers training program, which has been achieving massive success, is still undergoing and needs to be completed by the minister.

This is besides the undergoing Thanaweya Amma exams which require excessive efforts to be finished. Last June, around 646,000 students started the national high school Thanaweya Amma exams, applying for the second year of the booklet system that aims to eliminate the risk of exam leaks.

Earlier this year, Shawki announced that Thanaweya Amma students of one school will take their unified exam that is different from another school’s unified exam. Currently, Thanaweya Amma students nationwide take the same unified exam in each subject.

Shawki said that Egypt will sign a deal with the World Bank for $500 million to fund the government’s plan in the presence of Minister of Investment and International Cooperation Sahar Nasr in Washington.

In January 2017, the ministry introduced the new booklet system, which should reduce errors in the correction process and eliminate exam leaks; students are required to answer in the same test sheet and not in a separate answer sheet as the previous system.

A presidential decree issued in 2015 made leaking exams a criminal offense, leading to a maximum of one year in prison on a fine between LE 20,000 and LE 50,000.

On Tuesday June 5, Sherif Ismail submitted the resignation of his government only two days after President Sisi was officially sworn in as the head of state for a second term until 2022.

On Tuesday June 7, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi appointed Minister of Housing and Urban Utilities Moustafa Madbouly as the new prime minister.
