SOHAG, Upper Egypt - 31 May 2018: Minister of Transport Hisham Arafat laid the foundation stone of the first river port in Sohag governorate "Sohag Nile River Port" in the presence of Sohag Governor Ayman Abdel Moniem and Board Chairman of the River Transport Authority Abdel Azim Mohamed Ali.
The port will be built on an area of 15 feddans and will have a storage capacity of 255,000 tons, Arafat said.
In statements on Thursday, Arafat said that the port is part of a plan of the Ministry of Transport to establish river ports in the Upper Egyptian cities of Qena, Sohag and Assiut.
Establishing river ports will lead to reducing transport costs of goods and help decrease traffic congestion on roads and lower air pollution levels, he said.
Also, building the port will create job opportunities for the residents of Sohag, he added.
The port project in Sohag is part of a general plan that aims at building logistic centers in Upper Egyptian cities to help in revving up their socio-economic development efforts.
