Women allowed maximum of 2 maternity leaves in new law

CAIRO – 12 May 2017: Women will be allowed only two maternity leaves of four months each during her entire career to help reduce population growth, member of the parliament’s Manpower Committee Maysa Atwa said Friday.

Atwa explained that some employers do not prefer to hire women because of maternity leaves, but limiting such leaves will boost women’s corporate chances.

“We are largely in agreement with the Ministry of Manpower, and employers agreed to the draft law and we have made many gains. The youth should also be encouraged to work in the private sector,” Atwa said.

She added that reducing the number of maternity leaves will make parents plan to have no more than two children as Egypt’s population approaches 100 million.
