CAIRO – 15 May 2018: Grand Mufti Shawki Allam said that Thursday, May 17, will mark the first day of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
"Thus, Wednesday will be the last day of Shaaban, and Thursday will mark the start of Ramadan," Allam said in a statement on Tuesday.
Muslim nations like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia declared Ramadan would not begin Wednesday based on a moon-sighting methodology.
The month of dawn-to-dusk fasting is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is observed by Muslim communities worldwide as the month of fasting that commemorates the first revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad.
