CAIRO – 14 May 2018: Spokesperson for Cairo Metro service Ahmed Abdel Hady said the service is operating normally and the number of passengers was not affected by the new hikes in fares.


He added that there were 1,255 subscriptions on May 5, while on May 12, there were around 8,455 subscriptions.


The Ministry of Transport decided Thursday to increase the fare of underground Metro tickets starting Friday based on the length of each commute, the ministry said in a press statement.


Commuters are charged a basic fare of LE 3 ($ 0.16) for the first nine stops, andadditional LE 2 (total LE 5) for seven more stations.

The highest ticket price has been fixed at LE 7 if the commuter will use the metro for more than 16 stations.


The ministry also decided to apply discounted fares for government workers, students, senior citizens and citizens with disabilities.


Abdel Hady added that a new monthly subscription system is available for a month or 60 trips; the first level includes 8 stations for EGP 130/month, 16 stations for EGP 165/month, 26 stations for EGP 190/month, and 37 stations for EGP 250/month.
