Egypt, Uganda sign 3 MOUs in energy, agriculture, investment

CAIRO – 8 May 2018: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni signed three memoranda of understanding (MOUs) in the fields of electricity, agriculture, and the construction and management of industrial zones.

According to an official statement issued by the presidency on Tuesday, the first MOU is between Egypt’s Electricity and Renewable Energy Ministry and its Ugandan counterpart to establish a 4-megawatt solar power plant in Uganda, the second is regarding the development of agriculture in both countries and the third, and the last MOU is between the Egyptian Industrial Development Authority and the Uganda Investment Authority.

Museveni’s two-day visit to Cairo comes per Sisi’s invitation. Museveni also invited Sisi to visit his country as the first Egyptian president to see the Nile’s source and discuss its needs; Sisi gladly accept, promising to visit Uganda as soon as possible.

Both presidents affirmed during a joint press conference that they discussed a lot of issues of mutual interest regarding water security and Africa. Sisi affirmed that he explained Egypt’s point of view about several issues regarding water security and he thanked his Ugandan counterpart for the historical visit.

Earlier, Sisi received the Ugandan leader at Al-Ittihadiya Presidential Palace and several cooperation agreements were signed between the two countries.

Museveni’s visit is aimed at discussing ways to promote bilateral relations, in line with Egypt’s keenness to coordinate and cooperate with its brotherly African countries in different fields.

In June 2017, Sisi visited Uganda to participate in the Nile Basin Summit; several talks were held between Sisi and his Ugandan counterpart on the sidelines of the summit. Sisi’s first presidential visit to Uganda was in December 2016, where the two leaders praised the long-historical relations between the two countries and affirmed that efforts will be exerted to enhance the two countries’ relations and cooperation.
