CAIRO - 2 April 2018: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi received a phone call from his U.S. counterpart President Donald Trump, who called to offer his congratulations on Sisi’s landslide victory in the 2018 presidential election, according to a statement Monday by presidential spokesperson Bassam Rady.
Trump wished Egypt progress and prosperity, reiterating that his country wants to further deepen bilateral strategic relations, consultation and coordination in matters of mutual concern.
Sisi thanked the U.S. president and emphasized that joint cooperation will be enhanced in the coming period, per the interests of the two states.
The U.S. State Department expressed similar wishes, saying in a statement Monday "we look forward to continuing to work with President Abdelfattah al-Sisi to advance our strategic partnership and address our common challenges, while encouraging respect for and protection of basic rights and freedoms. The United States values its strong partnership with Egypt and will continue to work to advance our shared objectives."
The statement added "[w]e have noted reports of constraints on freedoms of expression and association in the run-up to the elections. We will continue to encourage a broadening of opportunities for political participation for Egyptians, and emphasize the importance of the protection of human rights and the vital role of civil society in Egypt."
