CAIRO – 5 May 2017: Egypt welcomed an agreement reached Thursday between Russia, Turkey and Iran, to create safe zones in war-torn Syria, according to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Egypt fully supports all efforts aimed at stabilizing the cease-fire agreement in all Syrian territories, putting an immediate end to the violence and improving the humanitarian situation,” the statement said.
Cairo also expressed that the newly announced agreement could contribute to resumption of UN-brokered Geneva talks on Syrian crisis.
In Astana, capital of Russian-ally Kazakhstan, both Turkey and Iran has agreed on a Russian-proposed agreement to create “de-escalation zones” in Syria, the move that was rejected by Syrian opposition and welcomed by both Saudi Arabia and the United Nations.
However, the U.S. Department of State announced Thursday its concerns on the new deal. Russian news agencies quoted Russian envoy at Syria peace talks Alexander Lavrentyev as saying that the de-escalation areas will be shut down for the U.S. warplanes and its coalition allies.
