CAIRO – 1 April 2018: The General Command of the Armed Forces issued statement number (17) on Sunday regarding the outcome of “Comprehensive Operation Sinai 2018." The operation began on Feb 9 to fight terrorism in North and Central Sinai, in addition to other areas in the Nile Delta and the Western Desert.
“‘Comprehensive Operation Sinai 2018’ is being carried out by the Armed Forces, in cooperation with the combat units of the Interior Ministry. These anti-terror units continue to launch raids targeting terrorist hideouts, as well as arms and ammunition warehouses, in northern and central Sinai," according to the statement.
- The Third Field Army carried out an operation and eliminated six militants
- Targeted a terrorist hotbed in North Sinai and eliminated a high-risk militant
- 84 plantations of marijuana and opium dens were discovered and destroyed in North Sinai
- 63 explosive devices were detected and detonated, which had been planted along the various routes to target troops in the areas of operation.
- 19 weapons, machine guns and one bomb were seized
- 993 hideouts were destroyed, along with the seizure of a warehouse which contained large amounts of chemicals and radio communication equipment
- 19 vehicles were destroyed and 64 motorcycles without metal plates were seized
- 513 terrorists and wanted-criminals were arrested
- A tunnel in Rafah City, North Sinai, was destroyed
- The Border Guards, in cooperation with the operational formations and the Air Force, foiled an attempt to smuggle 169 multi-national militants across the Egyptian borders.
As a result of the hostilities in the areas of operation, an officer and one soldier were killed, and one officer and one soldier sustained injuries.
The statement affirmed that such sacrifices ought to assure the nation that the Armed Forces are determined to eradicate the roots of terrorism and extremism, and to restore stability and development throughout Egypt.
