CAIRO – 31 March 2018: Giza Zoo will open to visitors for free on Saturday, which will be the national day of Giza governorate.

On March 31, Giza, which is the second most important governorate in Egypt after Cairo, celebrates its National Day that marks the anniversary of the battle which took place in 1919 between Nazlet El-Shobak's farmers and the British occupation troops.

Giza’s importance is also derived from the ancient Pharaonic monuments it hosts, like the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx.

Public parks and gardens are usually opened for free on national occasions and holidays.

The Giza Zoo is the biggest animal park in the Middle East, and it was opened for the public in 1891 during the rule of Khedive Tawfiq.

Many kinds of rare and endangered animals and birds live in the park and have successfully bred there.

The Zoological Museum, the first and largest of its kind in the Middle East, is located inside the zoo. It displays mummified animals from all over the region and Africa.
