CAIRO – 27 April 2017: A new law to protect Egyptian consumers is in the works to overcome the flaws in the current law, according to Atef Yaacoub, head of Egypt's Consumer Protection Agency (CPA).
Yacoob said the current law is not enough to protect consumers.
His statements came during his speech at the second session of the National Youth Conference in Ismailia, which discussed ways to combat the rising prices of commodities.
He said that the CPA received 38,000 complaints last year, compared to 13,000 in 2011.
The CPA encourages initiatives, such as the “Buy Egyptian” campaign, that aim to protect the rights of the consumer and reduce imports to ease demands on foreign currency.
Egypt has been suffering from a dire foreign currency crisis that finally led the government to introduce painful new economic measures in November.
