CAIRO –17 February 2018: Brazilian footballer Roberto Carlos accompanied the medical convoy that was sent out to Cairo’s largest slum, Ezbet el-Hagana, to spread awareness about hepatitis C and to conduct inspections.
In press remarks, Carlos said that he loves being in Egypt and his current visit will not be the last, extending his thanks to the Egyptian leadership for their efforts to end the spread of hepatitis C.

During the visit, resident families took memorial pictures with the former Real Madrid left back, who in turn signed his name on the t-shirts of his fans.
The former Brazilian legend and Real Madrid star arrived in Egypt on Thursday to promote the country’s long-running campaign against hepatitis C.

By 2022, Egypt will be hepatitis C free, announced Yehiya el-Shazly, president of the National Committee for Fighting Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), around a year ago.
Under the directives of President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, the Health Ministry announced a comprehensive strategy to eliminate hepatitis C virus (HCV), after infection rates hit their highest in Egypt in 2014, according to the World Health Organization.
Two million citizens infected with HCV have already been treated, the Ministry of Health announced in December 2017.
In another context, Carlos published an Instagram video of him scoring a goal from a free kick at the Cairo Stadium in Nasr City.

Considered by critics as one of the world’s greatest left backs, Carlos helped Brazil win the 2002 World Cup and the Copa America in 1997 and 1999.
