CAIRO – 25 April 2017: The deadline has passed for the Free Egyptians Party to accept nominations for the position of party leader, the party’s Board of Trustees said Tuesday.

Nominations for the positions of secretary-general and membership in the Supreme Council have also closed.

In its Tuesday statement, the board said it had received 185 nominations for the 50 seats on the Supreme Council. Only one candidate has been nominated for the two leading positions in the party: Mahmour El-Ayali as chairman and Ahmed Samir as secretary-general.

Elections are slated for 5 May.

Founded in 2011 by telecom tycoon Naguib Sawiris after the January 25 Revolution, the Free Egyptians Party is a centre/centre-right party that holds 65 of 596 seats in the Egyptian House of Representatives, more than any other party. The party is currently chaired by Essam Khalil, and Nader el-Sharkawy is acting secretary-general.
