CAIRO – 15 February 2018: Former Brazilian legend and Real Madrid star Roberto Carlos arrived in Egypt on Thursday to promote the country’s long-running campaign against Hepatitis C.

Former World Cup winner Roberto Carlos will expectedly accompany the medical convoy that will be sent out to Cairo’s largest slum Ezbet el-Hagana to spread the awareness of the residents about the Hepatitis C and ways to fight its prevalence and also to conduct field inspections as part of the national initiative titled “Towards a Hepatitis C Free Egypt in 2020”.

By 2022, Egypt will be hepatitis C free, announced Yehiya el-Shazly, President of the National Committee for Fighting Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infections, around a year ago.

Under the directives of President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, the Health Ministry announced a comprehensive strategy to eliminate hepatitis C Virus (HCV), after infection rates hit their highest in Egypt in 2014, according to the World Health Organization.

Two million citizens infected with HCV virus have already been treated, the Ministry of Health announced in December 2017.

Considered by critics as one of the world’s greatest left backs, Carlos helped Brazil win the 2002 World Cup and the Copa America in 1997 and 1999.
