CAIRO - 28 January 2018: The New Cairo Prosecution issued a release order for former head of Egyptian Central Auditing Organization, Hesham Genena, and ordered the detention of three others pending an investigation into clash broke out between Genena and others.
The Ministry of the Interior released a statement on Saturday regarding the alleged attack on the former top auditor, where he suffered serious injuries to his face and leg.
Genena, accompanied by his house guard called “Ramadan Ibrahim”, had just left his home in the Fifth Settlement outside Cairo where he hit with a car by man called “Al-Sayyid Mahmoud Khalaf” while he was crossing the street. Khalaf was accompanied by two others who clashed with Genena and Ibrahim.
According to the ministry, Ibrahim hit one of Khalaf’s accompanies with a metal stick, while another attacked Genena from the side with a knife.
Security sources said the two sides were questioned at a police station after the incident. The arms were seized by the police, and the case was referred to the prosecution.
Pictures later posted on social media and verified by Genena's family show him with a badly battered eye and a blood-soaked bandage wrapped around his knee.
Genena was a leading member in the former Chief of Staff of Armed Forces Sami Anan’s presidential campaign which was, until earlier this week, challenging Egypt's President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi in the upcoming elections.
Egyptian authorities arrested Anan in the last week over charges of breaking military codes by running for a political post without obtaining the necessary permissions, incitement against the army, and forgery of election documents. Then, Anan was removed from the voters’ database.
