CAIRO – 15 April 2017: An explosion that erupted in a gas pipeline in Cairo’s upscale Tagammu el-Khames neighborhood Saturday has left one dead and 16 injured, the Ministry of Health announced.

Seven fire engines have been dispatched to the scene in an attempt to put out the fire. Different areas in the neighborhood are expected to witness a water outage as a result of the explosion.

The petroleum ministry said in a statement that an explosion erupted in a pipeline that transports petroleum products between Suez and Katameya on the entrance of Road 90, the main entryway to New Cairo.

Following the explosion, the pipeline has been closed, the ministry said, adding that the fire is currently being contained and that the cause of the explosion is yet to be determined.

The explosion led to the closure of all roads leading to New Cairo until the situation is contained.
