CAIRO - 8 January 2018: Ireland is looking forward to improving and strengthening its relations with Egypt in several fields including immigration, countering terrorism, investments, trade and civil aviation, according to Irish Minister of Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney.
Coveney added in a joint press conference with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry in Cairo on Monday that both of them have discussed several issues of mutual interest, affirming that his country seeks to enhance its relations with Egypt.
"When I come back again to Cairo in the next visit, which I hope to be during this year, I will make sure to bring several companies and businessmen with me who are interested in expanding their investments in Egypt" Coveney said.
He added that Egypt's economy status needs a lot of international partnerships, "and we hope to become one of your country's allies." The Irish minster also expected starting direct flights between his country and Cairo as soon as possible.
"I consider today as a real start to enhance our relations and friendship," Coveney stated.
Commenting on American President Donald Trump's decision regarding moving the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Coveney said that although they consider the U.S. a close friend and ally, they totally disagree with them regarding this decision, affirming that his government considers the decision a step backwards in the peace process.
