CAIRO – 3 January 2018: Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon said that the Trump Tower meeting in June 2016 between the president's eldest son and a Russian lawyer was "treasonous" and "unpatriotic", according to excerpts from a new book obtained by the Guardian on Wednesday.

“The three senior guys in the campaign thought it was a good idea to meet with a foreign government inside Trump Tower in the conference room on the 25th floor – with no lawyers,” Bannon said in an interview with author Michael Wolff , the newspaper reported.

“Even if you thought that this was not treasonous, or unpatriotic, or bad shit – and I happen to think it's all of that – you should have called the FBI immediately,” Bannon said.

"Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" is based on more than 200 interviews with U.S. President Donald Trump and members of his staff. The book will be published Jan. 9 by Henry Holt.

In the book, Wolff – an author and columnist – is promised to offer "intimate portraits of the key players" – including Steve Bannon, the president’s former chief strategist; Jared Kushner; Ivanka Trump; and Sean Spicer, the former press secretary – and new details about the on-going chaos in the Oval Office.

Bannon was the head of the right-wing news outlet Breitbart News until he joined the Trump campaign as its CEO. After seven months in the Trump administration, he decided to leave in August and return to Breitbart as its executive chairman.

The Guardian said it obtained a copy of the book ahead of the official publication from a bookseller in New England.
