CAIRO – 2 January 2018: A total of 405 kilograms of pure gold arrived at the Cairo Airport Cargo Company (CACC) after it was extracted from the Sukari gold mine in Marsa Alam, a source from CACC said on Monday.

The gold shipment reached the airport on a private plane from Marsa Alam inside 26 packages.

CACC announced increased security for receiving the shipment, which will be later transported to Canada for gold-parting process and then sold in international stock markets.

The shipment was discharged in the presence of a representative of the Assay and Weights Administration, the source added.

The gold mine is located in the Eastern Desert and is being excavated by the Ministry of Petroleum and Metallurgical Wealth with Centamin Company.

The Sukari gold mine began production in 2009 and is the first large-scale modern gold mine in Egypt, with a base case production rate of about 500,000 ounces per annum, according to the official website of the company.

Approximately 1,300 people work at the mine. During the construction phase, that number was closer to 2,000, according to the official Centamin Company website.

The mine is located 700 kilometers away from Cairo and is considered as “Egypt’s first modern gold mine.”
