CAIRO – 22 December 2017: Israeli forces killed a Palestinian in Gaza on Friday during a protest over the U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israeli’s capital, Sky News Arabic reported.
Palestinian health spokesperson Osama el Naggar said in a statement that Zakaria al-Kafarneh, a 24-year-old Palestinian man, died after being shot in the chest east of Jabalia (in northern Gaza), the AFP reported on Friday.
Six other Palestinians were shot with live ammunition and one is in critical condition, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, as hundreds of protesters clashed with Israeli soldiers at various points along the border.
Naggar said on Thursday in an interview with the Voice of Palestine, a local radio station, that clashes between Palestinian youths and Israeli occupation forces have left roughly 11 people dead and more than 3,300 others injured in the Gaza Strip and West Bank since U.S. President Donald Trump announced his decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital on December 6.
More than 120 countries defied Trump on Thursday and voted in favor of a U.N. General Assembly resolution calling for the United States to drop its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
The U.N. General Assembly issued a resolution on Thursday which considered the U.S. decision regarding Jerusalem as "null and void" and that it must be rescinded.
Trump threatened to cut financial aid to countries that voted in favor of the resolution. A total of 128 countries backed the non-binding resolution, 9 voted against, 35 abstained and 21 countries did not cast a vote.
