CAIRO – 15 December 2017: Al-Wadi Al-Gadid governorate started developing a solar energy system, generating electricity, announced Ahmed Hussein, top official at the housing sector in governorate Al-Wadi Al-Gadid on Friday.

“The new project aims at producing 250 megawatt of power per hour, with a total cost of LE 1.9 million,” Hussein said, adding that a special committee has been formed to oversee the project.

The new massive solar power project will be inaugurated in 2018 in Aswan city. It aims to ease the electricity shortages and achieve self-sufficiency in the Egyptian energy sector.

Publicly dubbed as the “new solar power city,” Egypt’s largest solar plant costs around LE 40 billion ($2.3 billion) and will offer up to 6,000 job opportunities.
