CAIRO – 2 April 2017: Around 1.4 million energy-efficient LED streetlights have replaced their traditional predecessors across Egypt, saving up to 1.5 billion Egyptian pounds per annum,
Saturday citing Electricity Ministry spokesperson Ayman Hamza.
The old 400 megawatts bulbs are currently being replaced with less energy-consuming bulbs with a capacity of 150 megawatts, reducing power loads to 600 megawatts, Hamza added.
This comes in accordance with directives of President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi to reduce power consumption nationwide.
He further stated that around 1.5 million LED streetlights have been given to municipalities, noting that the project is implemented in collaboration between the Ministry of Local Development and the Arab Organization for Industrialization at a total cost of 2 billion EGP.
The state’s new General Budget for the 2017-18 fiscal year was approved by the cabinet Wednesday and is expected to be submitted to the parliament by the end of the week.
