CAIRO – 13 December 2017: The head of the Egyptian Lawyers Syndicate, Sameh Ashour, said Tuesday that he opposes expelling a member from the syndicate only because he belongs to the Muslim Brotherhood organization.

In an interview with Mohamed al-Baz on Al-Mehwar, Ashour said he agrees with terminating syndicate membership of any lawyer violating regulations, “Whether he is a Nasserite or a Muslim Brotherhood member.”

Ashour said a Muslim Brotherhood lawyer would be punished if he committed a political or criminal offense. However, political conflict does not lead to punishing a member.

Ashour said that he told former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi during the 100th anniversary of the syndicate, held in 2012, that although Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) holds a majority in the syndicate, it does not represent Egypt.

Morsi, who was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood organization, was ousted in 2013. Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates designated the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist group.
