CAIRO – 8 December 2017: Italy's foreign minister Angelino Alfano announced an investigation into Cambridge University academic Maha Azzam, who was a supervisor of Giulio Regeni, BBC said on Thursday.

Alfano’s decision came after his meeting with his UK counterpart Boris Johnson on Wednesday, who clarified that, "[A] British judge has accepted the European investigation warrant and therefore the Cambridge tutor can be questioned", BBC added.

Italian investigators want to examine her phone data from January 2015 to February 2016, Italian media report.

Earlier, Italy’s former Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, slammed the Head of the Democratic Party, Matteo Renzi, over slowing investigation procedures on the Italian Giulio Regeni’s murder case.

“All parties involved, including Egypt and Cambridge University, should show commitment and cooperation to probe the truth behind the killing of Giulio Regeni,” said Silvio Berlusconi.

On January 25, 2016, the 28-year-old Italian postgraduate student disappeared in Cairo, only for his dead body to be found on February 3 alongside the Cairo-Alexandria highway, bearing signs of extreme torture and beating, according to Reuters. This murder has led to strained relations between Italy and Egypt.
