CAIRO – 8 December 2017: Students at Fayoum University orchestrated a protest on Thursday, condemning U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement to move the U.S. embassy to the Jerusalem which formally recognizes it as the capital of Israel.
The students participating in the rally were chanting slogans against Israel.
An academic professor, Khalid Atalla, who also took part in the rally, said that the rally was an expression for rejecting trump’s announcement that distressed the feelings of Arabs and Muslims and would result in unpleasant consequences.
He added that the students participating in the rally showed solidarity with Palestinians by preserving all Christian and Muslim relics.
On Wednesday night, U.S. President Donald Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel during a televised speech from the White House.
Trump’s decision was met by a barrage of criticism and condemnations from many Arab and world leaders. Protests have since broken out in the Gaza strip, West Bank and different locations across the Arab world.
At least 31 Palestinians have been wounded in clashes in the Gaza Strip and across the occupied West Bank during protests against the U.S. President’s decision.
Jerusalem is of hugely importance to both Israel and the Palestinians. It contains sites sacred to the three major monotheistic faiths: Judaism, Islam and Christianity.
