CAIRO – 3 December 2017: Former Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafik left the VIP lounge of the Cairo International Airport, according to sources.
"Shafik left the airport in a black Mercedes guarded by three vehicles," added the sources. It was reported that Shafik would stay in a hotel until his house, that he left five years ago, is ready, according to a source in Shafik’s Egyptian National Movement Party.
In an announcement he made from the United Arab Emirates, Shafik said on Wednesday that he would run for president in the elections set to take place in April 2018.
On Saturday, Shafik has been arrested at his home in the UAE and has been deported to Egypt.
The UAE officials made no immediate comment, but a Gulf source familiar with the matter said "Shafik has publicly asked to go to Egypt and his wish will be met."
