CAIRO - 9 March 2017: Egyptian Minister of Defense Sedki Sobhi, on behalf of President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, laid a wreath of roses on the pyramid-shaped Memorial to the Unknown Soldier in Nasr City, in eastern Cairo, Thursday in celebration of Veteran Warrior and Martyr Day, according to a

statement

from the Egyptian Ministry of Defense.

Minister of Interior Magdy Abdel Ghaffar mandated chairpersons of security directorates to attend the celebration, the statement added.

The Army opened the military museums and its art destinations for the public for free starting from March 5-9 in honor of the day, military spokesperson Mohamed Samir said in another

statement

Thursday.

The military museums include the 6 of October Panorama in Heliopolis, El Alamein Military Museum in Egypt’s coastal city of Matrouh, and Port Said Military Museum, Samir said.

Egypt’s Armed Forces celebrate Veteran Warrior and Martyr Day on March 9 to commemorate the military and security forces who were killed by the Islamic State-affiliated group in Sinai formerly known as Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis. The commemoration coincides with the death of Abdel Moneim Riyadh, a former Military Chief of the Staff who was killed in the Egypt-Israeli War of Attrition 1969 and is recognized as a martyr.
