CAIRO –1 December 2017: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry confirmed Friday that every Egyptian citizen has the legal right to run for president, in the country’s first public and official response to former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafik’s previously-announced decision to run for the 2018 presidency elections.
Shoukry added that the law does not prevent anyone from competing in the presidential elections unless there is a court verdict that could legally bar him or her from proceeding with it.
Two days ago, Shafik went public with his intention to run in the upcoming presidential elections, indicating that he will soon return to Egypt after leaving it since 2012 following his loss in the 2012 presidency elections that resulted in Mohammed Morsi being at the helm.
