CAIRO – 22 November 2017: The Transportation Ministry is planning on rolling out a smartcard system, which will enable passengers to use all means of transportation, including UBER and Careem, through one rechargeable card, Transportation Minister Hisham Arafat announced on Wednesday.

“Our goal is encouraging the rich to ditch their cars and take the public buses, which will be operating at high-quality,” Arafat added during a press conference held as a part of the Second Urban Transport Forum in Cairo.

Minister of Investment and International Cooperation Sahar Nasr stressed the importance of linking Cairo to the new cities through urban transportation, increasing trade interactions and investments in those areas. She also referred to a new law being drafted by the government that aims to regulate the services of ride-hailing applications such as UBER.
