CAIRO – 22 February 2017: Two rockets were fired from northern Sinai into southern Israel on Monday. The attack was carried out by Islamic militants, according to a report from The Guardian, and comes a day after an Israeli drone strike killed several members of an Islamic State-affiliate (IS).

The rockets fired Monday fell harmlessly into a field, not posing a threat to any populated areas.

This is the second such attack against Israel this month. On Feb. 9, IS claimed responsibility for another volley of rockets fired from Sinai targeting the Israeli resort city Eilat, according to The Guardian.

The attack on Feb. 9 triggered Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system, which intercepted three of the rockets while the fourth exploded outside the city.

The attacks are the first time rockets have been launched against Israel from Sinai since 2015.
