FILE - Mass resignations strike the National Movement Party
CAIRO – 21 November 2017: The Egyptian National Movement Party is in a state of confusion following a recent wave of resignations of key leaders and members for different reasons.
Secretary General of the Party in Alexandria, Mohamed El Helw, claimed that the National Movement Party received support from the Muslim Brotherhood in the recent period, which led to internal divisions.
Founder of the Egyptian National Movement Party and former presidential candidate Ahmed Shafik denied that claim, describing it as false accusations not based on evidence.
Nine members of the National Movement Party in Ismailia resigned from the party, noting the party's alliance with the Brotherhood as well as in protest against the Deputy President.
The General Conference of the National Movement Party is scheduled to be held in the last week of December to prepare for the internal elections of the party. This comes amid expectations of the announcement of Raouf al-Sayyid, the current deputy of the President, to run for the presidency of the party.
