SEOUL - 9 November 2017: Three US aircraft carriers will soon conduct a rare combined exercise in the Western Pacific, the US military announced, as US President Donald Trump is traveling to Asia, Korea's Yonhap news agency reported Thursday.

The three carriers; USS Ronald Reagan, USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt, plan to stage "coordinated operations" in international waters from Saturday till next Tuesday, according to the 7th Fleet.

The flattops are leading strike groups also involving nuclear-powered submarines and advanced destroyers.

The US warships will carry out air defense drills, sea surveillance, defensive air combat training and other training operations, the Navy said.

It's the first time for the US to operate three of its 11 carriers simultaneously in the area since 2007. Such a move is widely interpreted as a show of force against North Korea's nuclear threats and China's assertiveness in the South China Sea.

Trump pointed out in his speech at the National Assembly in Seoul to the three aircraft carriers and deploying of nuclear submarines in suitable locations.
